In turn, California legalises assisted suicide

Publié le 5 Oct, 2015

On Monday, Jerry Brown, Governor of California, ratified the law authorising assisted suicide for people whose lives are drawing to a close. The legislation was adopted in September by the Californian Chamber of Representatives – forty-three in favour and thirty-four against (cf. Gènéthique du 10 septembre 2015).

The new legislation authorises terminally ill patients to ask their physician to prescribe medication to help them die. For Barbara Coombs Lee, President of the Compassion and Choices Association – a pro-euthanasia movement, “The introduction of this Californian law means that one American in ten will now have the option” to request euthanasia.

California is the fifth American state to legalise assisted suicide after Oregon, Washington, Montana and Vermont.
