Finnish Parliament rejects euthanasia and commits to palliative care

Publié le 11 Jun, 2018

The Finnish Parliament voted 128 to 60 to reject the draft bill to legalise euthanasia. It approved the proposal from the parliamentary commission for Health and Social Affairs “to create a national working party to improve palliative care legislation instead”.

In this country, palliative care replaces “intensive treatment that does not improve the patient’s health or prognosis” and, from an end-of-life perspective, doctors do not advocate the pointless prolonging of life. They work to alleviate suffering without attempting to cause or hasten the patient’s death.
