United States: South Carolina bans abortion after 19 weeks

Publié le 18 May, 2016

On Tuesday, South Carolina adopted the draft bill banning abortion after the 19th week of pregnancy except in cases where the mother’s life is in jeopardy.

The bill must now pass before Republican Governor, Nikki Haley, who already intimated in March that he would probably sign the bill if approved by the Senate.

South Carolina therefore becomes the 17th state in the US to return to the 1973 Roe versus Wade decision in which the US Supreme Court legalised abortion. The courts have nevertheless overturned bans approved in three states.
